Father Yacoub Alkbouche
Born in 1875 in Ghazir, Lebanon, Abouna (Father) Yacoub Alkbouche devoted his entire life to prayer and to proclaiming the Good News, especially among the poor and marginalized. He built over 200 Catholic schools across Lebanon and the western Middle East, educating more than 7,000 students who otherwise would have had no access to schooling. Through his preaching, he converted many non-believers throughout the region and became widely known as the Apostle of Lebanon. After the devastation of the 1914 war, he turned his energies to relief work, helping to found orphanages and working alongside the French government to assist widows and poor war refugees. He continued for years to care for orphans, the abandoned and the crippled, and provided hospitalization to the destitute.Father Yacoub's life stands as a shining example of the Gospel lived in radical service - a priest who saw the face of Christ in every suffering person and responded with tireless, sacrificial love.
