We Come To Your Table
As second grader teacher, I have the privilege of working, along with the parents, to prepare the children for one of the most special days of their lives, their First Holy Communion. As young children we realized only a small part of the significance of receiving the Eucharist. Now as adults, teachers, and parents ourselves, we are in a special position. We are responsible for helping to nurture the children’s spirits as we teach them what it means to receive the body and blood of Christ. I help the children prepare for their very special meal. A meal that was first celebrated at the Last Supper. A meal that we are able to experience together as a member of God’s family every time we go to Mass. So, we have become Disciples of Christ in our roles as teachers and parents. Together it’s our job to educate the children. Together, it’s our job to take them to Mass, to talk about the parts of the Mass and their significance. Together, it’s our job to be good Christian role models, setting examples of how to live their lives. Every new school year brings a new herd of sheep anxious to meet their shepherd. The journey begins with a promise by their parents to guide them on their way. As they move one step closer they find peace, as they express their sorrow and longing for forgiveness. They then make their way to the table of the Lord. A seat is waiting for them. As their teacher, I take special pride in watching the children grow closer to Jesus. I hope that I can help create the desire in them to spiritually want more. I hope to help them realize that this Holy Communion is the spiritual food needed to continue to fuel their beings to live like Jesus.
